Michigan plant was initially for e-bike
Samsung SDI was converting one of its battery pack factories in the US to meet demand for batteries from the energy storage system (ESS) market, TheElec has learned.
The South Korean battery maker acquired the facility in Michigan from Magna Steyr in 2025.
The facility houses two battery pack factories that turns batteries manufactured from Samsung SDI’s factories in Goed, Hungary to packs.
The first factory, which had manufactured packs for e-bikes made by Harley-Davidson, will be converted to hose for packs aimed at use in ESS by NextEra.
The second factory currently manufactures packs for plug-in hybrid vehicles made by Stellantis such as Jeep Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe.
