The general manager of BOE’s innovative application division said on Oct. 30 that the Chinese display maker is searching for Korean partners for creating next-generation micro OLED-panel-based products.
The Chinese executive was speaking at the Tech Inside Show – a high-tech materials and technology conference – held at Kintex, where he also delivered a lecture on OLED development trends and BOE’s purchase policies.
BOE began mass producing micro OLED panels from its Kunming City production lines last month. “We currently only have telescopes using micro OLED panels, but we are further developing the technology to apply to VR and AR glasses, drones, FPV goggles and projectors.
BOE is also looking to work together with other Chinese companies such as Huwei Technologies, DJI and Xiaomi to supply the panels.
The new panels must have an optic viewing angle of 80 degrees, improved from the current 46 degrees, in order to fit into VR and AR glasses. Brightness needs to be at least 5,000 nit, up from BOE’s current 2,500 nit, to use in projectors.
In Korea, BOE is seen to be in touch with companies such as Humax, Ivt and Lucky Enpla.
“Unlike LCDs and OLEDs that are based on glass substrates, micro OLED panels are a completely new technology based on silicone wafers, which means we need to find new areas of application,” said the general manager. “This is why partnerships are so critical.”
