SKCS is planning to make another leap in the electronic materials business. SKCS is trying to supply shrink-resistant film to Chinese smartphone makers. SKCS is a film specializing company established in May 2005. Its main business is various plastic films used in printing, photographic optics and so on. The company has also entered the market for the surface material for consumer electronics products this year. It was listed on KONEX by technology exemption in 2016. As of 2017, sales were KRW18.5bn and operating loss was KRW1bn.
On the 13th, Kyung-jin Cho, CEO of SKCS, said that the company is trying to get into the Chinese market through the new anti-shatter film. CEO Cho said, "We have secured basic technology and are in touch with Chinese smartphone companies rather than domestic ones."
The shatterproof film is used on the back of tempered glass for smart device displays such as smartphones and tablets. It plays a role in preventing debris from scattering when the glass is broken by external impact. The thickness should be precisely controlled and the brightness of the display should not be affected. There should also be a hard coating material technology. SKC Hi-tech and Marketing and Midori Mark of Japan are leading the sector.
When SKCS enters the market, it will lay the foundation for another leap after the color filter (CF) for plasma display panel (PDP) TV. Because Samsung SDI and LG Electronics have stopped selling PDP TVs, the electronic materials business has not had a breakthrough for a while.
One of the other newly developed products, home appliance surface materials, has successfully entered the market. With a facility investment of KRW 1bn, a new line has been set up in Cheonan. Samsung Electronics is a customer. It started mass production this month and contributed to some sales. If the volume is supplied in earnest from next year, sales can experience a substantial increase. This year, it expects sales of KRW 21.5bn and operating profit to turn positive (KRW 300 million) thanks to increased orders from existing businesses such as digital printing film and photoprotection film.
CEO Cho said, "We will achieve sales of more than 24 billion won, up 30% next year.
"The size of the surface material market for home appliances, which is the driving force for growth next year, is 31.26 million units per year, even considering only refrigerators and washing machines. In addition to Samsung Electronics, SKCS is also negotiating supply with LG Electronics. If the line is up to 30% in operation, and the order is enough, the company could produce more volume, the company explained.
