Grows to 39.1m units in 2019

Chinese display maker BOE shipped seven times as many OLED panels in 2019 compared to the year earlier in an indication of the company’s robust entry into the market, according to market research firm Omdia on April 17.

Last year, BOE shipped 39.1 million OLED panels. Among them, 22.1 million were rigid types, while17million were flexible displays. This means compared to 2018, rigid panel shipment jumped 12 times, while those of flexibles climbed more than four-fold.

In the flexible OLED panels market, BOE is the largest Chinese company followed by Visionox ,which shipped 2.6 million panels. Others such as Tianma and Royole also entered the flexible OLED panel market in 2019, each shipping around 10,000 panels.

For rigid OLED panels, BOE is at second place in China, trailing Everdisplay that shipped 26.7 million, mainly for smartphones and smart watches. China’s Truly also supplied rigid OLED panels for smart watches in 2019, with a volume of 16.7 million.

Altogether, Chinese panel companies have been rushing to ship more OLED displays. In total, they shipped 105 million panels in 2019, up from the 32 million in 2018. Among them, the panels for smart watches stood at 53.8 million, while those for smart phones stood at 52 million.

BOE shipped the most displays for both smartphones and smart watches. For smartphones, it shipped 17 million OLED panels. Next was Everdisplay that shipped 15.5 milllion and Visionox with 14.4 million. Tianma shipped 5.1 million.

For smart watches, BOE shipped 22.1 million, followed by Truly with 16.7 million, Everdisplay with 11.2 million, Vixionox with 3.5 million and Tianma with 300,000.

This year, Chinese panel makers are targeting to ship a total of 128 million of smartphone OLED panels. This is about 2.5-times the 52 million in 2019. Worldwide, around 513 million OLED panels for smartphones are to be shipped, among which Chinese panel makers will have around a 25% stake. The stakes held by Samsung Display and LG Display are to fall from 90% to around 70%.

For BOE, one of its main barometers of success this year will depend on whether it can supply the 6.06-inch iPhone scheduled to be launched in the latter half of this year. Samsung and LG are both to supply this product.

BOE currently has companies such as Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo and Lenovo, as clients. Aside from Visionox, BOE is the only Chinese display manufacturer supplying Huawei.
