A South Korean company has developed laser technology that can be used to cut the utlra-thin glass used as cover for display screens on foldable smartphones.

ITI said the technology was dubbed “Cool” can used to cut the glasses smoothly without damaging them.

The company, which specializes in laser technology, was currently trialing the method with local and global companies, it said.

Currently, glass cutters use mechanical wheels to cut ultra-thin glasses. Alternatively, some use laser to melt the glass and then cut them.

Using laser damages the glass less but requires them to be heated by 1000 Celsius, which makes avoiding damage and finish difficult.

Glass makers are struggling with a low yield rate and expanding production capacity from this dilemma.

This is further exasperated by the glass used as cover for display being 30 to 50 micrometers thin __ half the measure for newspapers.

ITI uses “thermal slitting” to overcome this __ the glass is heated and cooled in turn.

Company CEO Lee Seok Jun told The Elec: “We have previously supplied technology for cutting Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) that doesn’t form dust particles in the early 2000s for a large vendor.”

“Our glass cutting technology is unmatched; we have also supplied class cutting technology for one glass solution, or OGS, used for touch screens of smartphones,” Lee added.

ITI said it can also use the technology for curved surfaces. The firm is also supplying a similar technology used for cutting semiconductors, dubbed Cool Dicing, for a local client.

It is used for wafers that are thinner than 60 micrometers, and takes five to thirteen steps to finish the process. Japanese firm Disco, which specializes in precision processing, is its main rival.

ITI was formed by ex-LS Electric executives and is a major vendor for South Korean tech giants. CEO Lee received a doctorate for laser seramic in Russia.

Samsung Display has dubbed its ultra-thin glass Ultra Thin Glass and supplies them to parent company Samsung Electronics.
