Amperex Technology Limited (ATL) of China has started to mass-produce batteries to be installed in Samsung Electronics' new wearable devices.
According to the industry on November 11th, Samsung's Wireless Division will hold a Galaxy S10 public event in San Francisco, US on May 20th (local time). At this venue, Samsung will show its wearable devices such as 'Galaxy Watch Sports' and 'Galaxy Fit'. Samsung's new wearable devices will be equipped with ATL batteries. ATL also supplied batteries to Samsung Electronics' wireless business in 2016. The ‘Gear S3’ released at the time was equipped with an ATL battery.
The capacity of the Galaxy Watch Sports battery is 230mAh. The new capacity has been decreased from that of the previous Galaxy Watch 42mm (270mAh) and 46mm (472mAh). This is translated as a focus on portability. It is planned to be equipped with a low-power application processor (AP), TIZEN operating system (OS), and 1.3-inch organic light emitting diode (OLED).
The capacity of the Galaxy Fit battery was confirmed to be 70mAh. Compared to a similar wearable device 'Gearfit' that has a capacity of over 200mAh, the battery capacity is less than half. Industry experts say the decision has been made to increase portability, similar to that of Galaxy Watch Sports. It seems that they have either minimized the screen size or utilized the wireless charging function to increase the usage time.
The Wireless Business Division of Samsung Electronics is actively applying ATL batteries to wearable devices. The Galaxy Watch, which was launched last year, was initially equipped with a Samsung SDI battery and later received ATL products.
