Samsung Display’s sales from smartphone OLED panel will exceed US$5 billion in the first quarter of 2021, according to market research firm Omdia.
The South Korea display panel maker is expected to post sales of US$5.18 billion in the quarter.
It is a rise of around 30% from its first quarter sales in 2019 of US$3.975 billion.
More OLED panels are being used in 5G smartphones. OLED is thinner than LCD panels and is more advantageous in 5G smartphones that use more components.
OLED is also power efficient, which makes it suitable for 5G smartphones that are used more for content consumption compared to 4G smartphones.
Apple’s iPhone 12 is also expected to boost OLED panel sales of Samsung Display. The company supplies around 80% of the panels used by Cupertino.
In the fourth quarter of 2020, 62.8% of smartphones will use OLED panels, Omdia said. LCD panels will take up 31.8%, it said.
