SK Hynix was supplying its CMOS image sensor (CIS) for Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 3, TheElec has learned.
The sensor’s model name is HI-1337. SK Hynix began the production of the sensors on its 300mm wafer line last year.
It has 1 micrometer pixels, 13MP resolution and supports 2x zoom.
SK Hynix has branded its four latest CIS products __ including HI-1337 __ Black Pearl.
The company is attempting to capitalize on the increased demand for CIS in smartphones as more of them pack triple or even quadruple cameras.
However, SK Hynix is still a small player in CIS, with only a market share of 2% last year, according to Yole Development.
Sony held a 40% market share, followed by Samsung’s 22%.
SK Hynix is currently supplying its CIS to Huawei, Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi, It began supplying to Samsung in 2019, but had mostly supplied the sensors for Galaxy A, M and other low tier products.
But since last year, the company is steadily seeing its CIS supply to Samsung shift towards premium products. It has supplied its 13MP CIS called HI-1336B last year to Samsung.
