Samsung Electro-Mechanics said on Tuesday that it has developed 13 new multi-layer ceramic capacitors that can withstand 150 Celsius heat.
The MLCCs are designed for automotive applications and will be supplied to auto-parts makers, the company said. They range in size from 3225 (3.2x2.5mm) to 1608.
Conventionally, MLCCs’ capacity to store electricity drops when the temperature around it increases beyond the vendor’s guarantee.
Companies like Samsung Electro-Mechanics usually guarantee performance up to 85 Celsius for MLCCs aimed at IT applications; 125 Celsius for automotive applications and 150 Celsius for powertrains.
So far, Japan’s Murata and TDK had been offering MLCCs that can withstand 150 Celsius.
The pair are powerhouses in MLCCs for automotive applications.
