Company also aiming for A5 smartphones
Coasia Optics will be supplying lens modules to Samsung for use on the Galaxy S smartphone series, TheElec has learned.
The lens modules will be used for the front cameras on Galaxy S smartphones series, starting with the recently launched Galaxy S22 series, sources said. Coasia Optics’ affiliate Coasia CM already supplies camera modules to Samsung.
Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus models have 10MP front cameras while the Ultra version has a 40MP selfie shooter.
Coasia Optics will likely supply the lens modules for the standard and Plus models, the sources said.
While Coasia Optics wasn’t one of the first suppliers of lenses when Samsung first launched the Galaxy S22 series, the South Korean tech giant conventionally diversifies its supply chain months after products are launched to cut unit prices down.
Coasia Optics, formerly Diostech, was acquired by Coasia last year. Coasia Optics, in turn, acquired Coasia CM in the same year. The series of acquisitions was done by Coasia for vertical integration of its product line.
Coasia Optics was currently working to match its lens with Coasia CM’s camera modules for further competence. This will allow the pair to win orders from Samsung together.
In recent years, Samsung has opted to produce camera modules in single units from suppliers instead of having them preassembled in multi-camera setups like before.
This has opened up opportunities for late-comers like Coasia Optics to expand their share in Samsung’s supply chain.
Coasia Optics is also aiming to win orders from the South Korean tech giant for the mid-tier Galaxy A5 series, sources said.
Meanwhile, Samsung’s smartphone lens supply chain is dominated by Chinese companies Largan Precision and Sunny Optical.
For South Korean companies, besides Coasia Optics, only Sekonix has meaningful shares.
