Many of the battery equipment suppliers to Samsung SDI were taking part in the building of a pilot line being built by Norway’s Morrow Batteries, TheElec has learned.
Morrow Batteries’ investors include Agdel Energy Venture, the subsidiary of Norway’s electric utility Statkraft, and Denmark’s pension fund PKA.
It is building a battery factory in the city of Arendal in Norway, which is expected to have an annual capacity of 42GWh.
The pilot line will be built adjacent to this factory with a capacity of around 1GWh per year.
Equipment vendors to this pilot line will likely also be supplying their equipment for the main factory.
South Korean equipment makers taking part include: TSI for mixing equipment, PNT for electrode equipment, Philenergy will provide notching equipment, Youil Energy Tech for stacking equipment, MOT for cap welder and Kapjin for formation equipment. Korea Vacuum is providing the dry room.
These companies all supply similar kits to Samsung SDI, which also owns a 20% stake in Philenergy. MOT had provided its laser cleaners for cans to Samsung SDI’s second factory in Goed.
Meanwhile, Youil Energy Tech is the only company that supplies more to SK On over Samsung SDI.
Morrow Batteries will be procuring cathode and anode from South Korea’s Posco Chemical.
