Samsung Display will install its first evaporator for use at Gen 8 OLED production next month, TheElec has learned.
The machine was made by Japan’s Canon Tokki and will be used to manufacture Gen 8 OLED, which the South Korean display panel maker aims to use to make OLED panels aimed at PCs and tablets.
Samsung Display is aiming to supply the first batches to customers Dell and HP. It will ultimately aim to manufacture OLED panels for use by Apple for MacBooks. Samsung Display has yet to place a second order to Canon Tokki.
The chambers to be used with the first machine are also being currently made by H&iruja, ICD, Wonik IPS, and Pine Solution.
The Gen 8 OLED production line will likely go live sometime next year as it takes over a year to secure the proper production processes after machines are installed.
Last year, Samsung Display said it plans to spend 4.1 trillion won up to 2026 to secure a production capacity of 10 million units per year by then.
Meanwhile, rivals BOE and LG Display will need to play catch up. BOE said last year that it plans to invest in Gen 8 OLED production but is yet to decide on the evaporator vendor. LG Display is short of cash and needs to secure liquidity before it begins investing in Gen 8 OLED production.
