Samsung Display is being supplied with key OLED material from Poongwon Precision – one of LG Display’s suppliers – according to industry sources on Feb. 7.
Until now, Sewoo Incorporation has been the exclusive supplier of the material Open Metal Mask (OMM), which is a key component for producing small and mid-sized OLED panels.
Poongwon began supplying OMM to Samsung Display in the latter half of 2019. Poongwon is one of the top three manufacturers, along with Sewoo, leading the market.
In 2019, Sewoo had posted sales of KRW 79.2 billion, while Poongwon had posted KRW 41.9 billion. Another rival, Pims, posted just over KRW 10 billion. Pims targets mostly Chinese clients.
Samsung Display is one of the largest global customer of OMM. According to Chinese market research firm Sigmaintell, Samsung Display shipped up to 400 million OLED panels for smartphones in 2019. In total, it shipped 140 million flexible OLED panels.
In second place was China’s BOE with 17 million, up 286% on-year. This year, the firm is expected to ship up to 50 million. Following was LG Display with 13 million, up 30% from 2019. In fourth and fifth place was Visonox with 13 million and Tianma with 10 million.
