Semiconductor wafer producer SK Siltron has received the Gold Zero Waste to Landfill Validation (ZWTL) certification from Underwriters Laboratories.
Gold is given to companies with recycling rate between 95 to 99%.
SK Siltron received the certification based on its 2020 data from its third factory at its Gumi plant.
The company claimed it achieved a recycle rate of 99%, which was close to receive the Platinum certification given to companies with 100% recycling rate.
SK Siltron was the only semiconductor wafer company ever to receive ZWTL certification from UL, it touted.
The company said it developed recycling technology in August last year to handle the thousands of tonnes of waste slurry that are produced during wafer production.
The technology divides the slurry into sludge and oil. It then further divides it to powder and distilled oil. These are reused in production.
SK Siltron said it will aim to receive Gold ZWTL certification for all its facilities by the first half of next year.
