
LG Energy Solution said on Friday that it has developed the technology to have solid-sate batteries chargeable at ambient temperature.
The company collaborated with the University of California San Diego for the technology.
The pair developed a solid-state battery that can charge over 500 times at 25 Celsius.
Existing solid-state batteries can only charge at high temperatures of around 60 Celsius.
Solid-state batteries use solid electrolytes instead of liquid like those in conventional lithium-ion batteries. Solid-sate batteries has higher energy density and is considered more stable.
But those with lithium metal anodes can only charge at high temperatures and the charging time is also slow.
LG Energy Solution and the university removed the conductive material and binder of the anode and applied silicon particles of 5-micrometers instead to overcome the slow charging.
The company said after 500 of charging, their prototype had over 80% remaining capacity and over 40% higher energy density than lithium-ion batteries.
The results were published in Science volume 373 issue 6562.
