Battery equipment maker Avaco is aiming to supply its new electrode equipment to LG Energy Solution directly, TheElec has learned.
If it succeeds, it will be securing a second major customer after Ultium Cells, the joint venture between LG Energy Solution and General Motors, which it is already supplying equipment to.
Avaco is testing the new electrode equipment, sources said. It has already finished its first test and is conducting a second one that uses copper foil provided by LG Energy Solution, they said.
Avaco has applied its single roll-press technology to differentiate its equipment.
Conventionally, roll-press uses two large metal rollers to press the aluminum and copper foils.
Using one roller can increase the speed of the equipment and lower maintenance costs.
The second test is expected to take months to go through trial and error, the sources said.
LG Energy Solution is aggressively expanding its battery production capacity.
It has a total global output of around 155GWh per year and is aiming to increase this to over 400GWh by 2024.
