Hanwha Corporation has hired a former executive at Samsung SDI who worked on battery equipment, TheElec has learned.
STM vice president Ryu Yang-sik recently quit the company to join Hanwha Momentum, Hanwha’s business unit that manufactures battery equipment.
He will head the battery business of the unit. Ryu had headed Samsung SDI’s production technology center in the past and held posts at the South Korean battery maker’s overseas operations in China and Hungary. He joined STM, a subsidiary of Samsung SDI, in 2021.
He is known as an expert in production technology and yield for large batteries used in electric vehicles and energy storage systems.
Sources said his expertise is in how to apply cathode and anode in mixing and electrode processes during battery production to increase productivity and yield.
He played a key role in Samsung SDI quickly stabilizing its battery production lines in Xi’an, China and Goed, Hungary, they added.
Hanwha Momentum had also hired those from Samsung Electronics and LG Energy Solution this year.
The unit’s strongest product is coaters but it is also now attempting to sell roll presses and sliters.
It had almost won all the orders for coaters from Samsung SDI in the past two years.
